Kitten rescued from Grand Junction recycling facility

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — On March 8, operations at WM’s Grand Junction Material Recycling Facility were running normally — until an employee found a kitten mixed in with the materials.

WM employee Troy Borders was processing cardboard into the baler when he noticed a cloth bag in the mix; when he opened it, he found a kitten nestled inside.

We’ve seen our share of strange items come across the sorting line, but this was the first time we rescued a kitten.

WM District Manager Ken Stevens

Borders brought the kitten to the office on his next break, and Operations Specialist Ren Rich took the cat to Roice-Hurst Humane Society for a checkup before being placed into foster care. Before leaving, Rich asked the organization to name the cat “Lea” in memory of his daughter’s cat Leo, who’d been adopted from Roice-Hurst years ago and passed away the night before.

Lea is currently being bottle-fed and fostered by Roice-Hurst Executive Director Anna Stout.

Kittens this young require a human to perform all the care duties that a mama cat would, which is why it’s so crucial that we have a list of wonderful and willing foster homes to call when vulnerable babies like Lea come in.

WM officials want to remind residents and businesses to only place bottles, cans, paper and cardboard in their recycling carts.
