Game of Thrones' Kit Harington has provided a disappointing update on the mooted Jon Snow spin-off.

First reported in the summer of 2022 as in development at HBO, Harington was attached to reprise his Nights Watchman, who closed out eight brutal seasons of Thrones by marching back beyond The Wall with the wildlings.

Asked by ScreenRant where the project stands at the moment, the actor replied: "In development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it's worth it. And currently, it's not.

"Currently, it's off the table, because we all couldn't find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being.

"There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It's firmly on the shelf," he reiterated.

This comes after Thrones co-showrunner DB Weiss weighed in on potentially coming back for the Jon Snow series.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: "It would be so great; nothing would make [him and co-showrunner David Benioff] happier than to work with our people from that show. But there are a lot of other ways to make that happen that are fresh and exciting for everyone involved.

"Also, unless [Harington] has been doing a lot of working out, that's a really heavy cloak for a guy in his 40s to carry around – it's like 60 pounds."

Weiss, whose new sci-fi show 3 Body Problem recently dropped on Netflix, continued: "Maybe when we're 80 and Kit's approaching retirement, he can throw that cloak on again with real grey in his beard."

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray. House of the Dragon airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
