Kingston man accused of hate crime: Placing antisemitic banner on a synagogue

KINGSTON - The Ulster County Sheriff's Office arrested a Kingston man on Thursday and charged him with a hate crime - placing an antisemitic banner on a synagogue two months ago.

The sheriff's office said the Temple Emanuel Synagogue, on Albany Avenue in the city of Kingston, filed a complaint on March 25 after congregants discovered a banner with antisemitic language and artwork stuck to the exterior of the synagogue.

It was also discovered that the adhesive product used to attach the banner had also caused damage to the exterior of the structure, the sheriff's office said.

Through investigation, detectives from the sheriff's office identified Caleb H. Rochester, 55, of Kingston as the person responsible for posting the antisemitic banner on the synagogue.

On Thursday, detectives located and arrested Rochester. He was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief as a hate crime, and first-degree aggravated harassment, both felonies.

He was released and issued a ticket to appear in City of Kingston Court on a future date.

The name of Rochester's attorney was not immediately available.
