King County Council approves regional sewer fee rate increase

The King County Council approved a proposal Tuesday to increase regional sewer fee rates by 5.75% for 2023.

The proposal is part of a plan that would double sewer fee rates by 2032.

Councilmember Reagun Dunn issued a statement Tuesday stating his opposition to the proposal’s approval.

“Given skyrocketing inflation, spiking fuel costs, and the increasing unaffordability of housing, it is the absolute wrong time to be asking for more money from King County families by doubling planned sewer fees,” Dunn said. “This is a time where folks are cutting back financially and trying to make do with less, and our county government should be doing the same.”

In an April letter to Council Chair Claudia Balducci, King County Executive Dow Constantine said that the legislation furthers the county’s goal of “efficient, accountable regional and local government through continued sound financial management.”

Constantine also said that the legislation supports the Climate Action Plan by enabling King County to continue its efforts toward sustainability and climate change preparedness. “These efforts include investing over $200 million to reduce greenhouse gases, increase the use of biogas, and increase energy efficiency at Wastewater Treatment Division facilities,” Constantine said.
