HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Incumbent Republican Auditor General Tim DeFoor and State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta (D-Philadelphia) will face off in November’s general election to be the state’s financial watchdog.

The Auditor General’s office “is responsible for using audits to ensure that all state money is spent legally and properly.”

Kenyatta defeated Lehigh County Controller Mark Pinsley in the Democratic primary while DeFoor ran unopposed.

DeFoor previously served as a Special Investigator with the Commonwealth and as Dauphin County Controller. He’s served as Auditor General since 2020 and is a Harrisburg resident.

DeFoor has degrees from Penn State University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.

“Good government is about people, not politics,” says DeFoor’s campaign website. “I’ve spent my career fighting waste, fraud and abuse to protect families, seniors and local businesses. I’m running for Auditor General to help all Pennsylvanians and ensure our tax dollars can be spent on our priorities: lower taxes, better jobs, stronger schools and improving the cost of living for families and seniors.”

In 2018 Kenyatta became the first openly LGBTQ+ person of color elected to the Pennsylvania General Assembly. He ran an unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2022, finishing third in the Democratic primary.

Kenyatta currently serves on the House Commerce, Finance, Judiciary, Liquor Control and State Government Committees. He has degrees from Temple University and Drexel University in Philadelphia.

“I think that it is time that we have an underdog to be the watchdog for working Pennsylvanians,” said Kenyatta during his campaign announcement.

Pennsylvania residents will elect the next Auditor General during the Nov. 5, 2024, General Election.
