It seems love isn't in the air for Kentuckians. According to a recent study from Forbes Advisor, the state falls in the top five for divorce rates nationally.

While divorce rates have been on a downward trend since 2008, Kentuckians, especially, have room to be concerned. Here's what we know:

Divorce rates in Kentucky

According to recent data from Forbes Advisor, Kentucky ranks fifth for divorce rates in the U.S.

Per 1,000 married women in Kentucky in 2022, 19.52% were divorcing, and 12.6% of the total population was divorced. The cost of divorce based on median married household income in percentage was 7.53%, with an average divorce costing between $15,000 and $20,000.

States with high divorce rates

Nationally, divorce rates have increased slightly since 2022, and the Bluegrass State follows closely behind these states for the lead.

  • Wyoming: 13.30% of population divorced

  • New Mexico: 12.90% of population divorced

  • Arkansas: 12.90% of population divorced

  • West Virginia: 13.20% of population divorced

States with low divorce rates

The least common states for divorce are:

  • Alaska: 10.90% of population divorced

  • New Jersey: 8.40% of population divorced

  • Massachusetts: 9.20% of population divorced

  • New York: 9.00% of population divorced

  • California: 8.80% of population divorced
