Kenner police launch ‘Safe ‘N’ Sound’ program for residents with disabilities

KENNER, La. (WGNO) — The Kenner Police Department is launching a program to offer support to those who care for people with disabilities.

According to the KPD, parents, guardians and caregivers can register those who have disabilities with the department’s new Safe ‘N’ Sound Program.

KPD officials said the program will give officers access to information about the person’s disability that could help officers find the best way to safely approach them and bring them home if they become separated or lost.

“When a person calls with any incident involving that special needs person, all that information will pop up for the dispatcher, including pictures, current pictures and a history of maybe where that person has wandered off to,” said Kenner Police Department Chief Keith Conley.

According to the KPD, the Safe ‘N’ Sound Program will help officers minimize anxiety when reuniting loved ones with their family members and give officers a better understanding of how to compassionately handle those encounters.
