Ken Marino on What Flying Means to Him

The actor/comedian/screenwriter has some thoughts.

Its an airline, Ken Marinoof Wet Hot American Summer, Party Down, and Burning Love famemakes crystal clear in a recent commercial spot for KLM.

The comedian/actor/screenwriter explains the logistics of the Royal Dutch Airline by running around with arms as airplane wings, wearing a bluetooth earpiece, and extolling the virtues of tiny caramel covered waffles. It's all part of KLM's efforts to make travelers aware that, despite the somewhat cryptic name, it is in fact an airline.

Travel + Leisure talked to Marino about his personal travel habits. His responses may make you rethink airlines and airplanes forever.

What is the absolute No. 1 thing you don't travel without?

The number one thing I absolutely never travel without is me. I do this for several reasons. One, Im the one with the passport. And two, Im a delight as a travel partner.

No. 2 thing?

The second thing I absolutely never travel without is a healthy appetite.

What, in your opinion, is the most annoying thing that someone can do on a plane?

Calisthenics.

What about in a car?

Im annoyed equally with car calisthenics.

What is going through your mind when you're in an airplane?

Im a bird! Im a bird!

What is the worst part about flying?

The worst part is knowing that this is the closest Ill ever get to becoming a bird.

The best part?

This is the closest Ill ever get to becoming a bird.

What does the word airline mean to you?

To me, the word airline means a safe and welcoming place where someone can go and pretend to be a bird.

Do you have any weird airplane stories?

My weirdest airplane story happened one winter when I was flying to London for the holidays. I was sitting next to a charming, humble man who was dressed in a full body duck costume. The whole flight everyone was staring at meI mean him. But he didnt mind because for those four magical hours I was flying.
