KDPS: 2 arrested on unrelated charges after man killed by stray bullet

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Kalamazoo police say they have arrested two persons of interest after a 53-year-old man was killed by a stray bullet.

The two were arrested on unrelated charges, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety. Police did not release any information about the persons of interest, nor did they share any details about the arrests.

‘Stray bullet’ kills man as shots fired at Kalamazoo apartment complex

On Tuesday night, officers were called to Interfaith Homes for reports of shots fired and a person shot. There, they found a crashed car with bullet holes in it, as well as multiple shell casings.

In a nearby apartment, they found 53-year-old Mark Wayne Jackson, of New Baltimore, unresponsive with a gunshot wound, according to KDPS. He was taken to the hospital, where police say he was pronounced dead.

Investigators say the suspect fired “multiple” shots at a vehicle and then ran away. No one inside the car was injured. However, one of the rounds went through the front door of the apartment, hitting and killing Jackson.

KDPS Capt. Rafael Diaz previously told News 8 that Jackson did not live at the apartment and was there visiting family. Diaz said Jackson “had no interaction in what was occurring.”

“He was such an amazing person that is truly going to be missed,” Alicia Jackson, Mark Jackson’s daughter, said. “This tragedy has not only taken a father away, but it also took a friend, a brother, and a grandpa as well.”

GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family cover funeral costs.

Detectives continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact the KDPS Criminal Investigation Division at 269.337.8139 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100.
