Kate Middleton is lucky that when it comes to fancy occasions, she has a pretty fancy grandma-in-law to borrow from. And while we may not start rooting around our Gran's wardrobes when a black tie event pops up, our Grans aren't the Queen and they don't own tiaras (which is, quite frankly, disappointing).

The Duchess of Cambridge has been known to borrow these sparkly crowns in the past but for this week's ball, Kate decided on a different piece of jewellery instead.

As she was snapped in the car on route to the party with husband Prince William and bro-in-law Harry by her side, we could just about spot the historic necklace Kate was wearing.

The four-strand pearl choker with a diamond clasp in the shape of diamonds was made for the Queen using cultured pearls that the Japanese government gifted her.

While the Queen favoured the necklace herself and wore it on many occasions, she also wasn't against sharing, Princess Diana wore the same sparkly piece at a 1982 banquet at Hampton Court.

Ever the thrifty Duchess, Kate also decided to recycle her dress, opting for the same black Diane Von Furstenberg gown that she wore earlier this month at a gala dinner.

Here she was at that event:
