Kansas Supreme Court visits Lansing for live court session

LANSING, Kan. — The Kansas Supreme Court was in Lansing Tuesday night to give the public a live look at how the process works.

The session took place inside the Lansing Middle School Auditorium.

Rachel Szmed is a teacher at the school, but Tuesday night, she was the one learning, like many other people in the crowd.

“Not very many people get to witness something like that and to have it here and accessible to the Lansing community is really truly amazing,” Szmed said. “They get to put a personal spin on what happens in the courts. These are real people coming out and having decisions made for them.”

The Kansas Supreme Court held two oral arguments for the public to hear a civil case and a criminal case out of Wyandotte County.

“These are appeals that often we’d hear the arguments from attorneys in our courtroom in Topeka, Kansas,” Chief Justice Marla Luckert said.

Luckert said bringing these live court sessions helps the public understand the court of law and may even leave some feeling inspired.

“We hope that we can excite students about the profession,” she said. “Not just being an attorney or a judge playing a role in a court system.”

You won’t have to look for to see the different roles. Just listen to Donna Oswald’s story, who came out of retirement to be the honorary bailiff for the night.

“I was very shocked to get that call,” Oswald said. “Very surprised.”

Oswald spent over four decades working for the Atchison County District Court. She said she was honored to be a part of Tuesday night’s session.

“A lot of people don’t go to court, especially not before the Kansas Supreme Court and so I think this will be a unique experience to see the Kansas Supreme Court in session.

Tuesday was the first time the state supreme court held a session in Lansing.
