Kansas police lieutenant arrested in abuse case

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says they have arrested a Kansas police lieutenant following an investigation that began in 2023.

The agency says the Columbus Police Department and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office contacted the KBI in February of last year after receiving allegations of child sex crimes. The lieutenant has been on paid administrative leave since the allegations were made.

The KBI says they arrested the 55-year-old man was arrested at his home Wednesday morning in Baxter Springs for aggravated indecent liberties with a child, indecent solicitation of a child, and promoting obscenity to a minor. He was booked into the Cherokee County Jail on a $25,000.

The bureau says the case is still under investigation. It will be prosecuted by the Cherokee County Attorney’s Office.
