Kansas City region braces for potential severe weather

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — FOX4 is forecasting a couple rounds of potentially severe weather beginning on Friday, and the threat for storms have emergency managers on alert.

“All threats are there. Tornadoes are a real threat that’s going to be there,” Thomas Winter, Director of Franklin County Emergency Management, said.

It’s been on the minds of regional meteorologists for some time now – the ingredients for severe weather are moving into the Kansas City metro – meaning wind, rain, and hail are all on the table for incoming storms.

This type of weather during this time of year is not uncommon for our area. Hence, the push for people to be Weather Aware – a concept appreciated by emergency managers with this kind of forecast coming out of the storm prediction center.

“They normally run on about a three-day schedule. And they do have days four-through-8 published out there, but they don’t really talk about what happens on those days. And it always piques your interest or piques my interest when they start showing things day four through eight. And historically when those things have happened there has been pretty significant weather that has occurred at those times,” Winter said.

“Hopefully it will just fill up ponds that have been empty which would be great. But I think we can take a lot of that rain right now because we’re dry enough,” Winter said.

“Just be cognitively aware of what the weather is. Now’s the time where you check your tornado shelter out – if you’ve got a store room or closet that you do, you might want to clean it out and get yourself some space in that. Check the batteries in your flashlight. Make sure your kids did not run off with the flashlight.”

FOX4’s Weather Team will be constantly monitoring the storm situation from Friday through the weekend, you can keep up with the latest conditions in our weather section.
