Kansas City man charged with stealing equipment from Miami Dolphins

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City, Missouri man is charged for stealing more than $45,000 worth of equipment from the Miami Dolphins in January.

Jackson County prosecutors on Wednesday charged Joseph Brown Sr. with a class C felony charge of stealing.

According to court documents, Kansas City, Missouri police officers responded to a theft on January 14.

Officers met with a representative of the Miami Dolphins who said that a box truck containing team gear/equipment was broken into and items were stolen.

Court documents say the items stolen included miscellaneous media equipment, five Pelican cases with media equipment, four large aqua blue colored equipment cases, three large equipment cases, football pads, gloves, shoes, cold weather gear, hockey bags with large “cape” coats inside and game film.

The items were valued at $46,376.

Detectives found surveillance video showing a dark gray four door truck and identified it as the suspect’s vehicle. Officers later found the suspect vehicle, a gray Ford-F150, with equipment boxes in the bed that matched the description of the Dolphins equipment boxes.

When officers drove toward the suspect vehicle, the driver began speeding away.

Court documents say since October of 2023, detectives have conducted surveillance at a home near E. 20th Street and Askew Avenue in regards to Brown’s potential involvement with thefts of numerous vehicles and trailers in the downtown Kansas City area.

Brown was previously convicted of stealing in 2021, according to court documents.

Brown’s bond has been set at $50,000 cash only.
