Kali Uchis Does Her Best Lara Croft Impression in Tokyo

When in Tokyo?

Kali Uchis’s myriad style influences all seem to orbit the same sartorial world. There are hints of Brigitte Bardot and Edie Sedgwick in the singer-songwriter’s throwback sets, with a dash of Technicolor-era film references here and there, but generally her ensembles exude an Old Hollywood glamour that’s hard to pull off with such aplomb.

Uchis’s cohesive constellation of style references doesn’t mean that she’s afraid of experimentation, though, and her latest outfit is a case in point. Her penchant for pastels and old-school cuts took a surprising left turn in the form of a more urban ensemble that she debuted on the streets of Tokyo yesterday: The artist struck a pose in an all-black outfit composed of a crop top with plastic buckle straps, further embellished by the Playboy Bunny symbol, and some cut-out dark jeans held together by silver clasps. She finished it off with the super-chunky Eytys Angel leather sneaker and name-checked a surprising style inspiration in her Instagram caption: “First time in Asia and the Lara Croft jumped out.” When in Tokyo—why not?
