Kalamazoo airport, partners train for emergency

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — First responders got the chance to train for a mass casualty event Thursday morning at the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport.

The scenario involved a 90-seat airplane crash with 50 victims. Firefighters with the airport were assisted by mutual aid partners from several ambulance companies, Kalamazoo County Emergency Management, Kalamazoo-area hospitals and several area fire departments.

The simulation gave the airport the chance to assess and address gaps in its emergency response plan.

“It’s critical for us to run through a full-scale event, expectations for airport staff but also community support, mutual aid agencies that respond,” said Anton Bjorkman, the airport’s deputy director of operations and maintenance. “It’s a chance for them to get a little more familiar with the airfield itself and the airport and our operations.”

Simulations like this are required every three years by the Federal Aviation Administration.
