Juniper Street extension now open in Foley: officials

FOLEY, Ala. (WKRG) — Foley officials announced Monday the Juniper Street extension is now open between Miflin Road and Alabama 59.

The extension will provide a new route for north-south traffic through south Foley from U.S. 98 to Alabama 59.

The new road joins Alabama 59 at the intersection of Baldwin County 20 South.

ROAD EXTENSION LOCATION:

Work on the project began in 2022, according to city officials, but its completion was delayed because of supply chain issues. More specifically, there was a lack of availability of the mast arms used to support signal lights at the intersection of Alabama 59 and Baldwin County 20. This portion of the project was supervised by the Alabama Department of Transportation.

The lights were put in place earlier this month, and the final phase of construction was paving and striping the roadway.

The project also included the installation of new sidewalks, curbs gutters and a transition curb on both sides of Juniper Street as well as mast arms, mast arm poles and signal heads. The Juniper Street-Miflin Road (Baldwin County 20) intersection was also realigned during the project.

Officials said the extension will improve access in the area to more commercial development, and two hotels are currently being constructed near the site. The road will also provide better access to Tanger Outlets and other businesses in the area.

McElhenny Construction received the contract in 2022 after the Foley City Council accepted its bid of $4.53 million.

Foley and ALDOT are also working on improving the intersection at the Alabama 59-Baldwin County 12 junction. The project will go out to bid in September.

Foley and ALDOT are also widening and repaving the Foley Beach Express. The expressway will be turned over to the state when the project is done.
