Judge denies counsel change for reckless homicide suspect

GREENUP A circuit court judge overruled a motion for new counsel for a reckless homicide suspect on Thursday in Greenup County.

Tina K. Reed, 38, is accused of shooting 33-year-old Shane Fritz outside a residence near Jeff’s Valley in Lloyd in September 2022.

Reed, who was indicted in February 2023, said it was an accidental shooting. She also announced on social media that she was a domestic violence victim at the hands of Fritz.

Reed, who is currently not in custody, appeared in circuit court for a motion hour on Thursday. She is out on an additional property bond.

Judge Brian McCloud denied Reed’s request for a new attorney. She is represented by public defender Charles Oppenheimer.

“I don’t think you understand the fortune of having a good attorney like Mr. Oppenheimer,” McCloud said.

McCloud asked Reed if she personally had another attorney lined up, to which she said no — seemingly inferring that she expected the court to handle that for her.

“That’s not how this works,” said the judge.

Reed then acknowledged her trial is set for July 8, and then proceeded to ask for an extension.

McCloud quickly responded. “No, we’re going to court.”

Ultimately, Oppenheimer is still representing Reed, who is due back in court on June 27 for a pre-trial.
