Johnson City accepting applications for new Junior Council

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL)—The City of Johnson City is accepting applications for its new Junior Council, an initiative to promote civic engagement among local teens.

“This program is going to be an incredible opportunity for students to dive deeper into city government and blossom in their leadership,” said ETSU Roan Scholar Shelby Koerten.

The city encourages rising juniors and sophomores to apply for the Junior Council by April 26. Interested youth can apply on the Junior Council’s website.

The Junior Council, also called JC2, will provide the following for its youth members, according to a news release:

  • City government knowledge

  • Leadership and decision-making skills

  • Workplace skills

  • Opportunities to connect with local leaders

  • Participate in volunteer services

  • Share ideas or concerns about pressing topics

“We are looking forward to how this initiative will tap into the talents of Johnson City’s young citizens and inspire greater widespread civic engagement,” said ETSU Roan Scholar Eliza Smith.

Those on the Johnson City Junior Council will serve for one year and attend monthly meetings, the release said.
