John Battle teacher to participate in Holocaust teaching fellowship

BRISTOL, Va. (WJHL) — A John S. Battle High School teacher was selected to participate in a Holocaust teaching fellowship program.

Carrie Cornett, an English teacher at the high school, was selected as one of ten teachers in the United States to participate in the Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Teacher Fellowship Program, Washington County Public Schools announced Wednesday.

The highly competitive program selects fellows based on their knowledge of the Holocaust, community involvement and teaching expertise.

“I’m excited to be able to share my firsthand accounts,” Cornett said. “I think that anytime you’re teaching if you can tell them what you’ve experienced and make it more of a connection it helps bring it to life for them so I’m excited to learn more.”

Cornett will participate in the Pines, Sarna, Statfeld Summer Institute for the program. The institute is designed to immerse participants in advanced historical and pedagogical issues, the school district said in a release.

During the 2024-2025 school year, Cornett will reportedly be a liaison between the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and local educational institutions, professional organizations and community groups.

“We still have several who are part of the holocaust museum who share their stories through personal testimonies,” Cornett said. “It’s important to connect the kids with those people so that they can learn what happened.”
