New Jersey Turnpike retaining wall collapses; causing overnight shutdown

ELIZABETH, N.J. (PIX11) – A retaining wall along the truck lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike came crashing down in Elizabeth Monday night, causing major shutdowns to parts of the highway, according to officials.

A tractor-trailer was driving on the roadway when it overturned and struck the wall around 8 p.m., according to New Jersey State Police. The crash caused the wall to break and fall onto Elizabeth Avenue and Fourth Street, state police said.

All southbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike near the wall reopened as of 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday after being shut down Monday night due to the collapse.

No injuries were reported, according to Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage.

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority is doing emergency construction on the wall. Officials are waiting for an assessment from Turnpike engineers as to what the next steps are, Bollwage said.
