  • Jamie Lee Curtis shared a throwback photo in which she posed topless as a young actress.

  • The caption got real about the often “creepy” intentions the entertainment industry has with young stars.

  • “It’s an often complicated part of being a young performer, and me ‘a child of’ performers, wanting to be seen,” she wrote.

Jamie Lee Curtis, star of Halloween Ends, recently shared another of her regular throwback photos on Instagram—this time, a black-and-white shot of her posing topless—and in the caption, she got veryreal about what it was like to be taken advantage of as an eager young star.

“A pre Halloween shoot,” she began, implying that the photo was taken at or before age 19, when she made the first Halloween film. In it, she wears cargo jeans and holds what appears to be a shaggy throw pillow against her bare chest, her knees pulled up to it. Her expression is serious.

“Back then there was no Internet and once in a while a photographer contacted you and said that they wanted to take pictures of you. You were excited by the opportunity of having some new images and the attention. The truth is they were just going to sell them to publications in Europe, and around the world,” she continued.

Back then, she was flattered, but now, not so much. “I look back at it and there is something very creepy about their intentions, which I mistook for interest in me,” she wrote. “It’s an often complicated part of being a young performer, and me ‘a child of’ performers, wanting to be seen and hoping for more work opportunities.”

In reality, she said she was “a young person being taken advantage of by someone with ulterior motives and intentions.”

“Live and learn and lucky for me this was about as bad as it got,” she concluded.

This isn’t the first time Curtis has gotten candid about being exploited by her work. In her early career, she was often typecast in hyper-sexualized roles that focused only on her looks. Take her True Lies strip tease and Trading Places character, for examples. And although she wishes there were easier ways for her to climb the ranks, the path has led her to where she is proud to be today.

Now, at 63, she’s taken on some of the most creatively liberating roles of her life, like Everything Everywhere All at Once’s tax auditor Deirdre Beaubeirdra, for whom she intentionally did not conceal her stomach.

“All I’m interested in is freedom as a performer, and I don’t get that opportunity very often. But the times I’ve been able to be free, I’m on fire,” she recently told The New York Times. “I’m now in this beautiful new wave of my work, which is transformative.”
