Isaiah J. Rea held without bond in alleged murder of Steve Sanchez

Bond was denied to Isaiah J. Rea, 25, on May 7.

Rea is charged with one count of first-degree murder following his arrest in the early morning hours on Thursday, May 2. He is accused of fatally shooting Steven Sanchez at a residence on Princess Jeanne Drive on April 29.

In a motion for pretrial detention, prosecutors argued Rea had "been previously before the Court on numerous other open matters for which he has demonstrated a chronic unwillingness to appear."

Rea was taken into custody by Las Cruces Police officers at 230 Three Crosses and booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on Thursday, May 2, according to jail records.

On April 29, 2024, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to 1921 Princess Jeanne in response to reports about a gunshot victim. Officers found Sanchez in a backyard shed suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to court records, witnesses told investigators Rea was at the residence with Sanchez and another unknown man. According to witnesses, Sanchez went outside with Rea and the man. One witness heard a loud pop believed to be a gunshot.

One witness told investigators she went outside to check on Sanchez and found him unresponsive and when she returned to the residence, Rea was gone.
