Iran’s strikes on Israel echo tactics employed by Russia in Ukraine – ISW

Iran’s attack on Israel is similar to those that Russia has repeatedly launched against Ukraine, the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said on X on April 14.

Iran is thus trying to determine the best way to break through Western-style air and missile defenses.

The missile and drone attack shows that Iran is learning from the Russians and Houthis to launch increasingly dangerous and effective strikes against Israel and the United States.

The combination of drones and missiles is intended to confuse and disable Israeli air defense. Part of these efforts are simultaneous attacks by Iranian-backed proxies in Lebanon and Yemen.

Analysts believe that this Iranian approach replicates Russian experiments with combinations of ballistic and cruise missiles along with drones for increasingly effective strikes that can penetrate American and European air defense systems.

Iran has also learned lessons from Houthi attacks on international shipping around Yemen, ISW notes.

The Houthis used a combination of Iranian drones and missiles against U.S. air and missile defense systems, which allowed Tehran to test and improve its strike systems.

ISW argues that the continued use of Iranian-designed UAVs by numerous U.S. enemies and deepening ties between the parties using them will help Iran, Russia, North Korea, and China improve their use of these systems against the United States, its allies, and partners.

Washington and its allies face an increasingly interconnected group of adversaries who help each other and learn from each other, ISW concludes.

Iran's attack against Israel

On the evening of April 13, Iran launched its expected attack against Israel in retaliation for the strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria, which the Iranians blame on the Israelis.

The United States estimated that the attack would last for several hours and declared its "ironclad" support for Israel.

The Associated Press reported, citing Iranian state media, that Iran used ballistic missiles in its attack against Israel.

A few hours after the attack began, Iran hinted at the end of the strike.

31 people sought medical assistance.

The Israeli Defense Forces said that Iran had launched more than 300 missiles and drones into the country during the attack.

During Iran's attack on Israel, the U.S. Army intercepted more than 70 drones and at least three ballistic missiles, CNN reported. Iran's attack on Israel lasted about five hours.
