Iowa lawmakers are considering new protections for chemical and pesticide manufacturers.

The legislation is focused on the labeling of products. The bill allows that if a label is approved by the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) and is consistent with the most recent human health assessment under federal law and the EPA’s carcinogen classification, companies would be safe from civil liability. The bill does not give companies from China these same protections.

The bill still needs to go through the House, but if it passes and Gov. Kim Reynolds signs it, Iowa would become the first state to have these types of civil liability protections for those companies.
