Investigation underway following dispute at recreation center during election day

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — An investigation is underway after multiple people reportedly pulled out firearms near a voting location on Tuesday, according to the Columbus Police Department.

Police responded to a fight at Shirley B. Winston Recreation Center on Steam Mill Road at about 5 p.m. It was reported that during this fight, multiple people pulled out guns.

By the time officers arrived, both parties had left. As a pre-cautionary measure, the gym in the center was temporarily closed.

Columbus police shared this statement on the incident:

“We want to emphasize that despite this incident, there was no disruption in the voting process which was happening at a separate area inside the Shirley B. Winston Recreation Center. Voters were able to continue casting their ballots without interruptions. Due to this incident, we will be providing increased police presence at local recreation centers. The safety and security of our community, including polling places, remain our top priority.”
