Inside Utah Politics: Immigration, border security, third-party candidates

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — This week on Inside Utah Politics, we talk immigration, border security and third-party candidates.

We speak with State Senator Kirk Cullimore (Meet Kirk – Senator Kirk Cullimore). The Republican from Draper recently visited Eagle Pass, Texas, a hotspot for migrant crossings. Cullimore visited the border with Senate President J. Stewart Adams. The pair spoke with officials about security and immigration policy. Cullimore believes politics is getting in the way of sound policy and makes a request of federal lawmakers. He also talks about a pipeline from the border leading straight to Herriman.

We also welcome Ladd Johnson to the program. He is the chair of the United Utah Party (United Utah Party), a young political party running candidates and recruiting volunteers. Johnson discusses the roots of the party and the difficulty of navigating a system that favors two parties. Johnson explains the party’s platform issues and offers ways to get involved.

In Washington, the social media app TikTok is at risk after President Biden signed a bill into law that would ban the app if its Chinese parent company doesn’t sell it. Lawmakers are concerned about potential national security implications and data privacy risks they say the app brings.

We’ll also look at the Federal Trade Commission’s move to ban non-compete clauses for American workers. Those rules limit employment options for workers who leave their jobs in certain industries. Concern has grown over the years as more industries adopt the practice. Proponents of the rule believe the move will raise salaries and create jobs. But business groups are fighting it with plans for legal action.
