Inside Utah Politics: Brent Hatch, Jeanetta Williams

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – This week on Inside Utah Politics, we continue our series on Utah’s Senate candidates.

We talk with independent candidate Brent Hatch, son of the late Senator Orrin Hatch. With his trademark bowtie, Hatch discusses his experience in the government and private sectors. He weighs in on America’s hefty national debt while addressing immigration and border security concerns.

Jeanetta Williams is also our guest this week. Williams is the president of the Salt Lake City chapter of the NAACP. A civil rights leader for decades, Williams is running to represent District 26 in the Utah House of Representatives. Williams discusses her ideas to tackle Utah’s affordable housing crisis, air pollution and connecting disadvantaged communities with education and career resources.

We also turn our attention to Washington, to the growing concern over the H5N1 strain of avian flu. The virus has infected growing numbers of cattle and other mammals. A man in Texas contracted a mild case of the virus after coming into contact with infected cattle. Health officials say the virus does not spread easily to humans, but the possibility exists for the highly pathogenic virus to mutate and make human infection easier.

A major earthquake hit the island nation of Taiwan this week, collapsing buildings and injuring dozens. While the quake was the strongest to shake Taiwan in 25 years, authorities say it could have been much worse had it not been for widespread preparedness levels and strong building codes.
