Inmates removed toilet to escape Caddo County Jail

ANADARKO, OKLA (KFOR) — The Caddo County Sheriff’s Office is now releasing details on how three inmates, including a murder suspect, escaped the Caddo County Jail in Anadarko last week.

All three inmates were found more than 50 miles away at Resthaven Funeral Home and Memory Gardens in Oklahoma City.

CAPTURED: Caddo Co. escapees back in custody

“To hear that they caught the the escapees in the cemetery in Oklahoma City, totally bizarre. Blew us away,” said Michael Kelly, the managing partner of Resthaven Funeral Home and Memory Gardens.

That was reaction from an employee who works where the escapees were caught. Kelly said it was shocking.

“We had heard about the escape, but that’s so far away from here, it didn’t even really, you know, wasn’t even on our radar,” said Kelly.

Murder suspect Davantae Winters, Michael Brown, and Hector Hernandez broke out of the Caddo County Jail last week.

Deputies in Caddo County said the three escaped through a toilet-sink combination.

“They were able to pull that away from the wall and go in behind a wall and go down into a plumbing and chase, which allowed them to get to the outside,” said Thomas Adkins, and investigator with the Caddo County Sheriff’s Office.

The three weren’t spotted on cameras surrounding the jail either. Adkins said those are damaged due to storms and severe weather.

A manhunt ensued on Friday and the three ended up getting caught in Oklahoma City.

It’s not clear what led them to Resthaven Funeral Home and Memory Gardens.

“We do believe there was some outside help from a family member from one of escapees that took him up there,” said Adkins.

The escape uncovered staffing and structural issues within the jail which prompted ideas to prevent an escape like this from happening again.

“The Sheriff has been talking with the county commissioners and working on funding to fix some of these flaws that we’re coming across at this point,” said Adkins.

Adkins also said they have contacted the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigations for more.

They’re still investigating exactly when the inmates escaped and how long they were out before someone realized they were missing.

All three are now facing additional escape charges.
