Infinite Possibilities to hold rock-painting event

Apr. 24—HENDERSON — Infinite Possibilities is holding a rock-painting event to commemorate Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which is April.

Those interested should show up to the grassy area between the Henry A. Dennis building at 300 South Garnett Street and the Gateway Community Development Corporation at 314 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Friday, April 26. Attendees will paint rocks with messages of affirmation and are then encouraged to leave them in a spot in town or keep them.

Kanika Weeks founded Infinite Possibilities 15 years back. As a former educator, she said she felt a higher purpose and a pull to work outside the classroom. Nowadays, headquartered in the Gateway CDC building, the nonprofit supports victims of sexual assault and domestic violence by accompanying them to hospitals and to court.

When a victim is testifying on the stand, and oftentimes facing down their abuser for the first time, a familiar face in the crowd can help them keep it together, Weeks explained. The same is true in hospitals.

Otherwise, the group pushes to change systems in order to better serve victims. One item on their radar, said Weeks, is the lack of nurses that can test rape kits in Vance County.

There isn't a one, Weeks said, so women looking to get a kit tested have to drive to other counties.
