Increased accessibility for cancer treatment for patients in rural areas

PRINCETON (WVNS) – When it comes to people diagnosed with cancer, some have to drive far out of their way to get the treatment they need. To combat this struggle, WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital is opening a brand new Cancer Clinic and Infusion Clinic.

On Wednesday, May 22nd, WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital hosted a grand opening for some brand new cancer treatment clinics.

With medical treatments and technology advancing by the day, these clinics are aimed to provide those with cancer the best care possible.

In some situations, it is difficult for patients to travel far away for quality treatment.

Khristy Shrewsbury, Director of Outpatient Cancer Services, said these clinics will make the treatment process run more smoothly in the long run.

“We started out with two chairs giving infusions. Now, we have this beautiful center to where all of our patients have the convenience of doing all their cancer care in one building…which is the first step of this project. This clinic, it combined the two cancer clinics. The one that was on undercliff terrace and the one here in the hospital, into one big clinic,” said Shrewsbury.

The WVU Cancer Institute at WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital will be in reach of 10 different counties around the region.

Dr. E. Gordon Gee, President of West Virginia University, said he wants the community to know that quality health care is right in their community.

“Their university, West Virginia University, cares about them. Second of all, what we are doing here is to show how much we care by making sure that they have the very best possible health care and the very best possible opportunity to recover from some of the health challenges that they have and that they don’t have to travel far, but rather they can be right here in their own communities being taken care of by wonderful people,” said Dr. Gee to 59News.
