Illinois women’s basketball set to play for WBIT Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WCIA) — The Illinois women’s basketball team is making its first-ever appearance in the championship round of a non-conference postseason tournament. The Illini will face Villanova Wednesday night in the WBIT title game at Hinkle Fieldhouse, after Illinois beat Washington St. in the semifinals of the event on Monday. The Illini are doing their best to enjoy the ride, after winning games over Missouri State, Stony Brook, Tulsa and Wazzu to punch their ticket to the title game.

“We’re happy,” Illinois senior guard Makira Cook said. “Our energy has been really good, we’re kind of just riding with it, rolling with it. We’ve been having really good practices, really good energy.”

“We’ve been having fun with it and we’re playing loose, playing confident, and I think that’s so important in these runs,” Illinois head coach Shauna Green said. “Usually the teams that are loose, confident, you know and really just enjoying the moment and being present in the moment, and we’re doing that and I think you can see that in our play.”

Tip-off between Illinois and Villanova is set for 6 p.m. CT in a nationally televised game on ESPN2.
