Idris Elba Is Equally Charmed by Meghan Markle, Calls Her a “Beacon” for Women

Idris Elba is just as charmed as Meghan Markle as we are. The British actor attended a Prince’s Trust event on Thursday, introducing his new girlfriend Sabrina Dhowre to Prince Charles. But before he met with the royal, he spoke a few remarks about the future of the monarchy—and its new addition.

At the charity event, Elba didn’t hold back his praise for Prince Harry’s fiancée. “Meghan Markle, as a person, regardless of her color, is a role model. As a strong woman marrying into our royal family, she’s going to be a role model for any woman,” he said, according to Sky News.

“The point is that of course our society is one of mixed heritage and it’s nice to see Meghan within the royal family. It’s great,” he added. “And of course she’s going to be a beacon and of course she’s going to be someone that people look toward.”

Elba is an ambassador of the Prince’s Trust, which he credits with helping him get into acting. “If I pinpoint a time when I didn’t have any money, my parents didn’t have any money, I needed some help, the Prince’s Trust came through,” he said.

“The Prince’s Trust gave me some money to go to the National Youth Music Theatre,” Elba added. “And I remember if I hadn’t got that money, I wouldn’t have ever gone into that theater show, I wouldn’t have had that experience of going into the National theatre, and I probably wouldn’t be standing here today.”
