Oregon State Police is investigating a shooting that left one dead and a police officer injured early Saturday morning just outside of Salem.

The shooting and investigation closed Oregon Route 22 between West Salem and Oregon Route 51 for most of Saturday causing congestion impacting traffic into downtown Salem.

According to OSP, an Independence police officer was conducting a traffic stop at 1:30 a.m. Saturday when the vehicle fled.

Strike strips were used to disable the vehicle, OSP said, and a man fled on foot.

Responding officers located the man as he tried to flee in another vehicle, OSP said.

The man shot at police and struck a Polk County Sheriff’s deputy. Officers returned fire, OSP said.

OSP said the man was arrested but have not released his name. During the shootout, police say another suspect was killed and another was injured.

The sheriff's deputy, who has not been identified, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

The identity of the deceased and the injured suspect have not been released.
