Hwy 178 reopens after vehicle crashes into river in Kern River Canyon

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Highway 178 was closed at the mouth of the canyon in Bakersfield for several hours Friday after a vehicle crashed off the highway and into the Kern River, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At least one person suffered major injuries in the crash reported at around 12:30 p.m. along Highway 178 just east of the mouth of the canyon. An SUV was reported going off the roadway and into the river.

Highway was closed for several hours reopening to traffic at around 5:30 p.m.

Public Defender’s Office to no longer represent Abbasi

The cause of the crash was not immediately known. Emergency responders were called to pull the vehicle that fell about 200 feet into the river.

No other information about the crash was immediately available.
