Huntsville International Airport offers tips for Spring Break travel

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Before you get ready to take off on your Spring Break vacation, Huntsville International Airport, with the help of some Rocket City mascots, want to offer some travel tips to get you through TSA quickly and safely.

When packing a carry-on bag, Alabama Federal Security Director Tara Corse suggests that you “start fresh.” Make sure the bag is completely empty in case there are any illegal or prohibited items that could slow you down at a TSA checkpoint.

“For Spring Break we want to ensure that we have the safest and easiest experience for our passengers coming through,” Corse said. “With that said we want them to empty their bags out completely and make sure they understand things can hide underneath.”

Huntsville Havoc’s Rukus and Chaos alongside Trash Pandas’ Sprocket brought a few items of their own that they needed to be checked. While at the airport they learned to remember the 3-1-1 rule for liquids, gels, and aerosols. If a bottle contains more than 3.4 ounces of liquid, it must be checked.

Corse said TSA has seen an increase in gun interceptions at the airport. She explains while you can transport a firearm, it’s important that it is packed correctly.

“What we’re trying to do is get the message out that you can transport your weapons most definitely, but we want hem to do it safely and we want them to do it through checked bags. Once you get to the airport, go ahead and get to your airline. You’re going to have your case, its going to be locked appropriately,” Corse said.

20 guns were intercepted at Huntsville International Airport in 2023, and three have been intercepted so far this year.
