HT staff honored with several awards at Society of Professional Journalists contest

The staff of The Herald-Times joined colleagues around the state and here in Bloomington in earning several awards in the Society of Professional Journalists "Best in Indiana Journalism Awards." All work was published in 2023.

H-T photographer Rich Janzaruk and freelance photographer Bobby Goddin nearly swept the photo awards in the under 10,000 circulation division. Janzaruk brought home first and third place in news photography and all three places in features photography. Goddin took home first and second place in sports photography while Janzaruk placed third.

Former H-T reporter Rachel Smith earned second place for coverage of race or diversity issues for her Black History Month series. She earned third place in features writing for her story about Cemetery Island in Lake Lemon.

Carol Kugler won second place for her coverage of environmental issues.

Laura Lane won second place in features writing for a story about a woman who was injured by last year's tornado. Lane won second place for her coverage of social justice issues. Lane also won third place in column writing for My Favorite Ride.

All of Bloomington's other media outlets also took home wins, including H-T News Director Jill Bond, who won first place in editorial writing for a piece published by Limestone Post Magazine.
