HRBT’S new bridge opened early Friday morning

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Changes continue on the Hampton Roads Bride Tunnel’s (HRBT) $3.9 billion expansion project.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (V-DOT), at 1 a.m. the new bridge opened to drivers coming from Hampton to Norfolk on Eastbound I-64.

Major Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel traffic shift starting Thursday night, VDOT says

10 On Your Side’s KaMaria Braye drove on the bridge in the morning and said the change was easy to navigate. There are traffic signs to help direct traffic.

The new bridge sits at the Hampton shoreline and is on the right of the old bridge.

VDOT says the next step is to demolish the old bridge.

The goal for the expansion is to increase capacity, ease congestion, and enhance travel time. When the expansion is finished, there will be 2 tunnels going both north and south at the HRBT.

The project, which started in 2020, is the largest highway construction project in Virginia.

The project is expected to finish in 2027.

VDOT said the project will widen 10 miles of the I-64 corridor in Norfolk and Hampton.
