How Dries Van Noten Froze Flowers in Blocks of Ice

The Louvre. The Musée D’Orsay. The Dries Van Noten show?
Kind of.
In Paris on Wednesday, the Belgian fashion legend turned his catwalk into a gallery space with original work — or “botanical sculptures” as the artist calls them — by Azuma Makoto. The Japanese artist froze traditional Japanese floral arrangements inside giant blocks of ice and staggered the designer glaciers along the runway.
Here’s a breakdown of the installation, which has since melted. (Sorry!)

4,101 feet of water
90+ types of flowers
78 degrees Fahrenheit inside the venue during the show
33 degrees Fahrenheit is the scientific “melting point” for ice
23 original sculptures
10 different invitation designs (all photos of flowers) sent to show guests
4 cities (Tokyo, Amsterdam, Antwerp, and Paris) traveled by Makoto from start to finish
633 times the frozen flowers have been tagged as #driesvannoten on Instagram so far
88,803 times Dries Van Noten has been tagged today on Facebook
And one fun fact: The show’s closing song was “Frozen,” by Madonna. Nice one, Dries!
