House GOP infighting over antiterrorism rule

The House GOP's infighting resumed yesterday after hard-right lawmakers blocked the reauthorization of a key antiterrorism rule under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

What happened: Nineteen conservatives broke with Speaker Mike Johnson to block the rule, Section 702, which allows for targeted surveillance of foreign nationals without warrants. [NBC News]

Why it happened: Donald Trump pushed legislators to kill the bill, claiming it was “illegally used” against him during his 2016 campaign, seemingly referring to a different section of FISA. [New York Times]

What’s next: Seeking to draw closer ties to MAGA forces, Johnson offered Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who voted against the FISA rule, an advisory role and plans to meet with Trump tomorrow. [AP]

3 QUESTIONS

...about burnout

Struggling to get through the week? It could be burnout. My colleague Kaitlin Reilly breaks down her reporting on what to do about it.

Lily: How does burnout differ from simply being really tired?

Kaitlin: A psychologist told me it’s usually tied to chronic stress at work. It’s not just physical, but emotional exhaustion, and often comes with lack of motivation.

Lily: If I’m burned out, what’s one thing I can do right now to start feeling better?

Kaitlin: Unplug and go for a walk or try breathing exercises to reduce stress. The psychologist compared managing burnout to managing a budget. You don’t want to overdraw your “energy bank account.”

Lily: What do experts recommend doing to handle burnout in the long term?

Kaitlin: A mental health professional can help you evaluate if you need to make drastic life changes, like switching careers, and strategize ways to improve your overall mental well-being.

What else can you do to get rid of burnout? Here are more tips.
