Horns Report: A look at how March Madness begins for UT men’s, women’s hoops

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Texas Longhorns men’s and women’s basketball teams are in March Madness, and that gives Roger Wallace and Billy Gates something to talk about in this week’s Horns Report.

On the men’s side, Texas is the No. 7 seed in the Midwest Region, and they’re in a unique position because they don’t know who they’re playing in the first round yet. Virginia and Colorado State play Tuesday in the region’s First Four game to decide which No. 10 seed takes on Texas on Thursday in Charlotte. Longhorns head coach Rodney Terry said he and the coaching staff have to prepare for both teams until they settle it on the court in Dayton, Ohio, and then Texas will have Wednesday and part of Thursday to install a specific game plan.

The UT women snagged a No. 1 seed in Region 4 and will host the first two rounds at Moody Center. Texas takes on No. 16 Drexel, the Colonial Athletic Association tournament champions, at 2 p.m. CT Friday. The Dragons walked a tightrope through the conference tournament, winning their first three games by a combined five points before capturing the CAA’s automatic bid 68-60 over Stony Brook. Drexel finished the regular season with a 19-14 overall record.

Alabama and Florida State are the other teams coming to Austin in the 8-9 matchup and play after Texas-Drexel on Friday. The winners from Friday will face off Sunday for a berth in the Sweet 16 and a trip to Portland, Oregon.

Roger and Billy discuss both men’s and women’s tournaments in the video above.
