Hornell woman arrested on welfare fraud charges

HORNELL, N.Y. (WETM) – A Hornell woman has been arrested on welfare fraud charges after she allegedly filed false documents last year in Steuben County.

According to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, Samantha M. Hendee, 33, was arrested on April 30 by investigators of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office after she allegedly filed false documents to the Steuben County Department of Social Services from February 2023 to December 2023.

As a result, she received $13,588.42 which she was not eligible for.

Hendee has been charged with the following:

  • Offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, a class E felony

  • Falsifying business records in the first degree, a class E felony

  • Welfare fraud in the third degree, a class D felony

  • Grand larceny in the third degree, a class D felony

She was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and released.
