Holocaust survivor speaks at Illini Chabad event

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — On Sunday, University of Illinois students hosted an event welcoming Holocaust survivors and their stories.

This is the second year the Illini Chabad featured a guest speaker who told the crowd about surviving World War II. That speaker was Lin Novistky. A member of the audience was also a Holocaust survivor.

William Gingold said his parents struggled to find safety in war-torn Europe since the day he was born in 1939.

“My parents were pretty brave, I think,” he said. “They had some foresight to get out of the hospital immediately. So, one day after I was born, the hospital that I was in with my mom was bombed.”

Students also set up tables highlighting other survivors’ stories. The Chabad plans to continue the event next year.
