Holly Springs PD looking for suspects involved in fatal park shooting

HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. — Police are looking for suspects involved in a shooting last Friday night that led to the death of a 21-year-old man.

What started as a peaceful evening for people visiting William Henley Sr. Park ended in chaos when gunfire rang out just before 10 p.m.

“We seen this guy standing in the middle of the road with an AR-15 in his hand,” a witness said.

She didn’t want to be identified but told WREG that she was shocked to see the armed man open fire so casually.

“He wasn’t running, he was just flat foot standing there,” the woman said. “Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang – my husband told me to back it (the car) up and get out of there.”

Another witness who also wanted to remain anonymous, was approaching the park when chaos erupted and saw the victim being shot while walking by the edge of the park.

“We thought it was firecrackers and when we realized it was gunfire, we saw a young man fall while we was trying to get out of range.”

The victim was later identified as 21-year-old Jaqavion Markell-Ball by the Marshall County Coroner.

Those who witnessed the tragedy are disgusted by the violence but said they feel blessed that they escaped without suffering any injuries.

“It was closer to death than I ever been,” a witness said. “We could have been innocent bystanders.”

The victim’s family declined to speak with WREG. We’ve also reached out to the Holly Springs’ Mayor for comment, but he was not available.

Holly Springs Police say detectives are developing suspects and will not comment on the type of weapon used. For now, they don’t want to discuss the case with the press.

However, they still urge anyone with information on what happened Friday night to call the Holly Springs Police.
