Hold the fentanyl. Drugs found in hamburger at El Paso border crossing

It wasn't a whopper of a drug load seized at the El Paso border last month.

In one of the region's most unusual contraband smuggling attempts, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers found a small half-ounce pack of fentanyl hidden inside a hamburger on March 23 at the Paso del Norte international bridge connecting Downtown El Paso and Juárez.

The fentanyl (0.034 pounds) was inside a plastic bundle in a hamburger that a 27-year-old U.S. woman was bringing back from Mexico, CBP officials said. The woman was arrested and the drugs and lunch were seized.

The fentanyl burger smuggling attempt was likely more comfortable than hiding it in a body cavity or taped to a body, which occur on a regular basis on the El Paso-Juárez border.

On March 14, for example, a 34-year-old U.S. man was arrested after a package of methamphetamine (0.9 pounds) was found strapped to one of his legs during a pat down search at the Paso Del Norte Bridge, CBP said.

On March 18, CBP officers found a fentanyl bundle inside the purse of a 32-year-old U.S. woman at the Ysleta border crossing (Zaragoza Bridge) in El Paso's Lower Valley. Another fentanyl bundle was found in her "vaginal cavity" during a body X-ray scan during the booking process at a detention facility, CBP said.

In the last two weeks, CBP officers at the border ports in the El Paso region arrested 44 fugitives and seized more than 158 pounds of marijuana, 62 pounds of methamphetamine and 25 pounds of fentanyl along with more than $162,500 in illicit cash, officials said.
