Hiring of new superintendent expected Tuesday

Apr. 26—The Dalton Board of Education is expected to name Steven Craft the new Dalton Public Schools superintendent Tuesday afternoon.

Craft is the school system's chief of student services and activities. He was named the sole finalist on April 15.

The board will hold a special called meeting at 1 p.m. in the council chamber at City Hall where it is expected to name the new superintendent and approve his employment contract.

The current superintendent, Tim Scott, was recently named the new executive director of the Georgia High School Association. Scott is expected to continue in his post until the new superintendent is sworn in. A date for that has not been set.

School system officials said under state law the board had to wait two weeks after naming the sole finalist to make the decision official.

The board is asking for input from the public on the decision.

"The board continues to welcome questions and feedback from the community prior to the final vote ... ," school officials said in a press release.

There is time for public comments listed on the meeting agenda as well. Craft is expected to deliver remarks then also.

Since March, board members have "diligently conducted a selection process to identify the ideal candidate to lead the district into its next phase of excellence," the press release reads.

Detailed information on Craft can be found by visiting the Dalton Public Schools website https://www.daltonpublicschools.com/district-resources/2024-superintendent-search.

Also listed on the board meeting agenda is a presentation on proposed core curriculum for the school system's newly-implemented Dalton Reads! literacy campaign.

"The curriculum, Savvas myView, aims to empower students with comprehensive and engaging resources to enhance literacy skills," school officials said.

The school system announced its first director of literacy, Ali Finley, earlier this month. Amanda Weeks was named as the system's new literacy coach.
