Update: Highway 1 to Big Sur closure expected to last until Monday morning

Update, 11:56 a.m.: Highway 1 remains closed south of Posts, California to Ragged Point, California.

The coast near Big Sur was reevaluated Sunday morning after closing Saturday. Maintenance and engineer staff were on site assessing the highway closure at 8 a.m., according to a tweet from Caltrans District 5 on Sunday.

At 11 a.m., crews were cleaning up debris and rocks from the roadway.

Caltrans expects the highway to reopen Monday morning.

Original story:

Highway 1 was closed along the Big Sur coast on Saturday after the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for the Colorado and Dolan Fire burn scars.

The closure comes three days after the route was reopened following a rock slide on Dec. 2, as heavy rains and wind lashed San Luis Obispo County, leading to various traffic collisions, including one fatal crash on Highway 41.

The highway was closed at Ragged Point on the south end and Palo Colorado Road on the north end.

Caltrans said it will evaluate conditions Sunday morning to see if the highway can be reopened.

The National Weather Service issued the warning Saturday at 2 p.m. The warning was in effect until 5 p.m., but was expanded to include the highway.

“Rainfall is expected to exceed the threshold for possible debris flow in the Dolan and Colorado Fire burn scars,” a release from Caltrans said. “The National Weather Service’s flash flood watch was modified to a warning for this coastal area of Monterey County.”

Motorists are advised to use an alternate route, Caltrans said.
