High Point joins state water safety event

Apr. 29—HIGH POINT — Oak Hollow Lake will be among 14 sites in North Carolina that will host beginners' kayaking safety programs on May 18 to mark National Safe Boating Week.

The main organizer of the event at 11 state parks and three other sites is the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation.

Classes will cost $15 per person for the day, including a free kayak rental for anyone who needs it for training that would typically cost $75-$150 at retail. All instructors are nationally certified volunteers who will provide paddling and rescue training.

This is the second year that kayak safety classes are being offered in North Carolina. Last year, 279 students across North Carolina and Tennessee were trained by nationally certified instructor volunteers in 24 locations. It was likely the single-largest education day for kayak safety in North Carolina state parks history, the state parks division indicates.
