LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The Henderson Police Department released body-cam video Tuesday a month after a barricade with a wanted suspect that resulted in the department’s first officer-involved shooting of the year.

The 8 News Now Investigators first identified the man as Trevor Cooper, 31, a jujitsu specialist, through sources. The Clark County coroner’s office later confirmed Cooper’s identity. Cooper was been wanted by police for a March kidnapping, police said.

The barricade began on April 12 at 11 a.m. at a home on Callen Falls Avenue near Galleria Drive and Water Street. However, police said Cooper was wanted following the kidnapping back on March 5. At that time an officer conducting a traffic stop was approached by a person who said he had a man in his car who claimed to be a victim of a kidnapping.

While interviewing the person claiming to be a victim of a kidnapping, officers learned that the suspects were at a home on Pickled Pepper Place. When officers arrived at the home they took one suspect into custody, the second suspect, identified as Cooper fled from the scene.

Henderson detectives said they found probable cause to arrest both suspects for the following charges.

  • 1 count of first-degree kidnapping

  • 1 count to administer a drug to aid in felony crime

  • 1 count conspiracy to commit kidnapping

On April 12, officers located Cooper at the home near Galleria Drive and Water Street.

Officers made contact with a roommate who said Cooper was armed with a high-powered rifle with access to over 1,000 rounds of ammunition, was wearing body armor and multiple other weapons in the home. Officers were also told Trevor stated he was willing to “shoot it out with cops, and would commit suicide by cop,” police said.

Cooper then discharged his firearm from a concealed location. A SWAT officer then returned fire to defend himself and fellow officers as they exited the home, police said.

“At one point during negotiations communications efforts were lost with Trevor, negotiators attempted numerous times to re-establish communications, however communication was never re-established,” police said.

During the 37th hour mark of the barricade with no contact from Cooper for several hours, officers from Metro police SWAT located Cooper deceased in the attic.

No officers were injured in the incident.

“We can confirm Trevor did not suffer any gunshot wounds or apparent trauma, his official cause of death is pending and will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s office,” police said.

Cooper overdosed on a drug and died in the home before police made entry several hours later, sources said.

Had Cooper survived he would have been arrested on the following charges.

  • 5 counts assault with a deadly weapon on a protected person

  • 1 count possession of a short barreled rifle

  • 1 count of resisting with a firearm

  • Multiple counts of discharge a firearm in/from an occupied structure

  • 6 counts of prohibited person in possession of a firearm

The investigation is ongoing at this time, according to police.

Henderson police arrested a person with the same name as Cooper’s in February on a domestic violence charge. In that case, the charges indicated Cooper used a deadly weapon and substantially harmed his victim.

In that case, Cooper was accused of “repeatedly attacking and battering” a roommate on two occasions, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained Monday. Police later went into the home, finding it covered in blood.

After his February arrest, a judge released Cooper without requiring bail because prosecutors had not filed sufficient evidence to detain him, court records indicated.

Documents indicate police later came to the home, finding several guns in Cooper’s bedroom. Police said they seized the guns due to a protection order filed in California, which prohibited him from owning any firearms.

Editor’s note: 8 News Now was unable to ask the Henderson Police Department questions regarding the barricade and officer-involved shooting incident as the information was posted on the department’s Youtube page.
