‘All hell broke loose’: Henderson family recalls their tornado experience

ST. MARTIN PARISH, La. (KLFY) — The Robin family has lived in Henderson for over 40 years and said out of all the storms they have gone through, nothing can compare to what happened on Monday. Penny and Carrol Robin said they were aware of the storms coming through Acadiana, so they paid close attention to the news to see what path it was taking.

“He [the meteorologist] was saying the speed on the wind and then he said the velocity was about 97 miles per hour, and I said I think it is coming straight for us,” Penny Robin said.

Penny Robin said the electricity started going in and out. Before they knew it, the storm was there.

“All hell broke loose,” she said.

“You can see the wind and you can hear it blowing when it really got here it sounded like a freight train passing over,” Carrol Robin said.

To remain safe, the family went to the middle of the house with no windows because they knew the sound of a train meant a tornado was coming.

“Everything was making that noise,” Carrol Robin said. “A loud noise came from the back of the house.”

That loud noise was the roof of their back patio and kitchen ripping off flying into the trees and landing in the bayou. When the storm ended, Carrol Robin checked out the damage dealt. He said although it is bad, what matters the most is that everyone was okay.

“My biggest thing was that we were safe,” he said. “The house, the work, that can all be reparable. Injuries and life are not replaceable.”

The Robins said they contacted their insurance provider and should be in good hands as they recover from the storm.
